XI'AN BIKE RIDE
Level : Challenging
This tour cuts right through the heartland of both ancient and modern day Chinese culture. The route passes through areas of Henan and Shaanxi Provinces where remnants of some of the most ancient civilizations on earth are still clearly visible.  Along the way there are numerous cave dwellings which are mostly empty, but some are still inhabited. The Yellow River binds this area and its population together.  In the region we find not only the famous Terracotta Warriors of Xi'an but also the place where Mao Tze Tung and his followers began their Communist revolution just over 50 years ago.  It is quite an extraordinary challenge and an unbeatable experience.
Tour Start Date in 2008: 6/15, 9/14, 10/12, 10/19
Itinerary
Day 1 Fly from Beijing to Zhengzhou, and then transfer to Luoning.
Day 2 From Luoning, after around 20 km of uphill ascent, our efforts are rewarded with wonderful views.  There is another beautiful off-road section after lunch followed by an undulating path through lush, green countryside. Then, we head back into civilization.
Day 3 First we cross the Yellow River.  We turn onto minor roads ascending above the river past hundreds of cave dwellings.  Later in the day the road flattens out and we cycle through several Chinese towns.
Day 4 We enjoy great views of the Yellow River as we cycle alongside it for some of the way.  Very soon into the ride we cross the river over an impressive 1km long bridge.  The last few kilometers are mainly along flat terrain and quiet roads with trees scattered around before crossing the Wei-He River into the town of Weinan.
Day 5 Ride 35km through local villages before reaching the site of the Terracotta Warriors.  The site includes a 2000 year old underground vault of some 6000 life-size Terracotta Warriors.  We continue cycling through orchards and small farming communities and re-group outside of Xi'an.  Then we cycle as a group to the finishing line at the Southern Gate of the city wall.
Day 6 Xi'an Tour: The Bell Tower, Goose Pagodas and the largest mosque in China.  Noon flight to Beijing.
Day 7 Explore Beijing: The Forbidden City & Summer Palace. Afterwards we enjoy a celebratory meal.
Day 8 Depart Beijing.
